MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am honored to serve as the AHS 50th Alumni Association’s president for the
next three years of your association. It is an honor to represent such an
outstanding organization that is so strong in tradition, pride and Sandie
spirit! I have some very tough shoes to fill as Carolyn Maas and Kurt
Gehring both did such an awesome job as president. A big thank you to the
alumni board and membership for their support and encouragement as I take
on this endeavor.

I graduated in 1973. Due to the fire in 1970, the class of ’73 would be the last
of the Polk Street Sandies. We attended makeshift classes in the nearby
churches, the armory and gym. We didn’t mind, it made for some fun stories,
a few pranks and created great memories. There was a sense of unity-we were
in this together, stronger for the challenge and most importantly, we were
going to graduate as a Sandie!

In September1973, the new Amarillo High opened on Danbury, a new
location, a new set of challenges. Now the student body would consist of
students that would have gone to Tascosa and AHS. This meant merging long-
time traditions, creating new traditions and developing their own unique form
of Sandie spirit. They met the challenge head-on and they too are closer and
stronger for it!

My goal as president is to bring the old and the new together sharing our
stories, experiences, growing with the old and new traditions and developing
strong Sandie bonds for generations to come.

To do this, we need to hear from you! This is your organization! Please send us
your experiences, memories, pictures, thoughts, what you’ve been up to etc. so
we can share them in the Sandie Spirit Newsletter! This makes our newsletter
fun, informative, interesting and keeps us better connected!

Also, we ask you to please talk with other Sandies and encourage them to join
our amazing organization!
